Evette Ton is an artist based in Orange County, CA working with various mediums in painting, drawing, and sculpture.
The bizarre and delicate elements near the coast have always fascinated me, especially those that have a mundane and abundant presence in our lives. These overlooked natural phenomena create moments of stillness that are often ignored. Through repetitive and obscure mark making I attempt to grasp these organic ambiguities and replicate the experience of searching through mist, fog, and vague memories of the natural world. Blurring the lines between gesture and realism, an accumulation of distinct marks creates a vivid, yet hazy picture. By highlighting the familiar and temporal pieces of nature's mysterious beauty, affectionate and gentle rendering revives ephemeral recollections of those who call California home.
I often think about the paths I walked during my time at school and the atmospheres I traveled them in. It was always foggy in the early mornings, all I could see in the horizon was a collection of shadows but in just an hour the fog would lift. These specific conditions on the paths quickly became integral to my daily life and were consistent but also fleeting. Eventually I came to memorize its patterns, recognizing every slight difference that each morning presented: a lone bird, a change in the tree branches, or a difference in wind pattern that shifted shadows. With repetitive gestural line marks I recreate the magnetic pull of the endless fog, giving it the life I witnessed. I look at these works and am transported back to that time and place, visualizing where I once stood, and become that past version of myself again which now only exists in memories and drawings.
